Special Olympics Area Games:

Thank you to those who were able to make this event and help to feed many Special Olympians, coaches and volunteers. It was nice to see that we were able to get enough volunteers to help with this event, especially since it changed weekends.

I’d like to give a special thanks to Claire who did an incredible job gathering all the goodies with the help of Marilyn and Frank prior to the event. An additional thank you goes to Marianne for also gathering goodies prior to the event. Then of course there are the wonderful volunteers that showed up that day, Kevin and Jane for cooking and stuffing those dogs, Keith and Richard for making those refreshing drinks and helping to put condiments on everyone’s dogs, Anne for pouring drinks for everyone, Marianne and Robin for dishing out cookies and chips, Claire and Karen for handing out wrapped dogs on the plates and gathering tickets and monetary donations for those that had no tickets. We collected $184.10 which once expenses have been deducted, the rest will go as a monetary donation to Special Olympics. We also want to recognize the club members who didn’t attend but made a donation, Tanya, Brian, Mike & Joanne.

Although the crowd was smaller than planned because of the change in the schedule of when the event was to happen, we still collected 271 meal tickets with probably another 100+ that had no tickets on them. No one went hungry and watching all those athletes with medals on them and a smile so broad on their face that you could light the world with it, you couldn’t help but feel warm all over even though it was a little overcast and a quick sprinkle happened at the end when we were cleaning up.

The beads were another fun thing happening. Robin and Claire were able to keep their beads all day long and go home with them still in tact. On the other hand, the rest of us had them go around a bit. But they ended up at the end with Anne and she walked off with all but Robin and Claire’s. So it was profitable for her. Maybe we’ll get them off her at the next event you see her at. The one that has the most so far is Allison, so maybe she’ll be brave enough to go on the boat cruise in June and see if she can hold onto them. Although their’s a cash bar there and margarita’s are her favorite…. J

So anyone and everyone who is interested, please let Colleen know if you want to attend the boat cruise. Hope to see you all there.
